Hi, I have following question. I do have a chronic hepatitis C, but with a still very good
working liver. Will I Still be able to pass the FAA Examine Class I, II and III? thanks
for your help.

......................................................................
As long as you are not having symptoms from hepatitis C, and as long as
your liver profile blood tests are normal,
you should not have a problem. Bring to your AME, a letter from your doctor
indicating your status, along with a
copy of your blood tests.

More of an FYI than a question. I noticed on the Infectious Disease FAQ's that you say that the FAA
has, to your knowledge, never issued a certificate to a person infected with HIV/AIDS. Just last
week, I recieved a Class 2 certificate though I am HIV positive and on medication. Please help spread the
word that there is hope for aspiring aviators that just happen to be HIV positive but otherwise healthy.
Thank you! Anonymous

Yes, times ARE changing for the better. I too have an airman patient who
is HIV positive, and who just got his third class medical. He is not having
any of the symptoms of the disease.

I have just been diagnosed with Lyme Disease. Will this keep me from getting my
medical certificate?
|
......................................................................
No, as long as you have been treated with antibiotics and you are symptom-free. You
will need to give your AME a letter from your doctor indicating the diagnosis,
treatment, and outcome.

Why does the FAA feel that HIV/AIDS is a disqualifyer for a medical certificate?
Wants to know...
|
......................................................................
In large part, it is because the medications used have side effects that impair
ones ability to fly safely. If the pilot is HIV positive, but does not exhibit
signs or symptoms of the disease, and in NOT on medication, he may apply for a
special issuance.

I have been and still am a very healthy individual, Dedicated my life to flying
asa career. On a regular blood donation, 6 months ago I found out that I have HCV,
but have never had any symptoms. How will this affect my medical/career?
|
......................................................................
Probably not, as long as you remain asymptomatic. You will need to give
your AME a letter from your doctor stating that while the blood test was
positive, you are asymptomatic.

What's the FAA position (for a 3rd class medical) on Hepatitis C and the use of
Interferon to treat liver disease? Dan
|
......................................................................
Hepatitis C is not generally disqualifying as long as the disease in not
active. However, Interferon use will preclude you from flying while you
are being treated with it.

I have AIDS. Is this a problem with the FAA? Bob
|
......................................................................
Yes, it means that you are not eligible for a medical
certificate. You can apply for a special issuance, but I know of no
cases that have been approved to date.
