Testicular Cancer: I have been diagnosed with a hard mass in my left testicle after an ultrasound. It was caught last week during a first class physical. I go in tomorrow for a consult with a urologist about treatment. I am sure the testicle will have to be removed but am unsure of whether it has spread to other parts of my body. What are the chances of getting medical re-issued? Brett

There is a pretty good chance that you will require prophylactic chemotherapy for a short period of time. The chances are good that you will be given a special issuance, as long as the seminoma has not spread to other organs.
You cannot fly while receiving chemo. You will need to submit a detailed report to the FAA written by your doctor. The letter should state that the cancer is cured, and that you are not on any medications for it.

Is your pilot medical certificate in jeopardy? See my website at www.flightsurgeon.com

I have had successful colo-rectal cancer surgery and follow-up chemotherapy regimen. I am well healed and am taking no medication. Does this medical history preclude my renewal of a Class II medical certificate? Willard

No, but you will have to apply for a special issuance, submitting all your pertinent medical records along with a current update from your treating doctor.

I have student ticket. I have since tested positive for prostate cancer. I have chosen to have the prostate removed. The tumor was 1mm in size. Will this prevent me from receiving dual training? Will this ground me? Jesse

Yes, you can continue to fly with a license pilot. Once you are post op, you can apply for a special issuance

I suffer from lazy eye (one eye). I have held a 3rd class medical for more than a decade and recently decided to apply for a first class medical. I submitted the necessary application, including form 8500 and the required results from my eye doc. Much to my surprise, the FAA requested additional information from me regarding a small malignant melanoma I had removed from my back last year. I submitted all of the information as requested, but have yet to receive approval or denial on my waiver. Granted, it's been only a little over two months, but I am concerned about the FAA's interest in the melanoma - a condition my dermatologist insisted was nothing special. Any thoughts? Could this disqualify me from receiving my waiver and 1st class medical? John

I had transitional bladder CA in 1982 removed surgically with no recurrence. Do I still need to provide MD letter and hospital records? This is for a 3rd class med.

Yes, you will have to submit, and request a special issuance. You will need a recent summary from your treating doctor.

Is squamous cell cancer disgualifying for a second or third class medical?
......................................................................
As long as all of the lesion was removed surgically, and there is no metastisis, you are eligible for a special issuance, on a case by case basis. You will need to submit all of your medical records along with a summary letter from your MD.

In July of 96 I had a surgery for adenocarcinoma(large cell cancer in my left lung) 1/2 the lung was removed and 1 area of a lymph was treated for cancer (chemotharapy). I have recovered and walk 3 miles twice a week. I have had 1 yr of no cancer evidence via CT scan. Is there a chance I can get a 3rd class medical and what are the general parameters to show recovery. G.F
......................................................................
It in unlikely for a pilot with a history of adenocarcinoma of the lung to get a 3rd class medical. You can apply for a special issuance, but they will be looking for several years of remission.

I am currently taking Glipizide and Glucophage for diabetes and Desipramine for nueropathy. I also have had embryo carcinoma. Would any of these stop me from getting a medical certificate? John
......................................................................
You mentioned that you have "embryo carcinoma". I am going to suppose that you had a testicular cancer and the biopsy returned positive for embryological differentiation. Testicular cancers have a high recovery rate, and therefore are eligible for special issuance by the FAA, as is diabetes. You will need to send in ALL of your medical records, along with letters of support from your treating doctors.

I am a 41 year old airline pilot who has been clear of my third episode of melanoma for 3 years. The FAA has yet to reinstate my medical certificate. They say there is no published info on melanoma risk for brain mets. Any suggestions?
......................................................................

I have had a few pilots with localized lesions removed completely by surgery, who have been approved. I might suggest that you submit to them an MRI of the brain along with a letter from an oncologist indicating that you a free of melanoma. You have already given them a letter from your dermatologist indicating that you have been successfully treated. Another route, is to check with the AOPA medical dept. for the latest. Please let me know how you come out with OK City,... and best of luck. You will have to jump thru some hoops, but if you keep trying, you probably will get it
