Dr. Robert's I have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (spastic colan), it has gotten better, but I wonder if I will be able to get my ATP in the future? Tony
......................................................................
Probably, yes. But it also depends on the severity of the disease, along with what medications are being used (if any).
You will need to give your AME a report from your doctor stating your diagnosis, any tests completed (and their results), current status, etc. Most pilots I see with IBS continue to fly. As you know, IBS is characterized by occasional flare-ups. During those periods, a pilot should not fly, until he is better.

I recently "failed" my 3rd class student pilot examination due to a history of Crohn's disease. My disease has only been severe 3 times in 17 years. It is well under control with Pentasa at this time. The AME has asked for me to get my Dr. to write a summary for submission to the regional flight surgeon. I am just curious as to what symptoms of Crohn's disease they would find disqualifying. James

The symptoms are not the issue. The issue is what medications are require to keep the disease in check. They generally allow up to 20 mg of prednisone per day. Be sure to check out our new web site at <www.flightsurgeon.com>

Dear Dr. Roberts, I have been diagnosed wih GERD and Barrett's Esophagitis. I take Prilosec and Propulsid daily and am told it is a problem for my third class pilots liscense. Any "explanation" and/or "solutions" to this problem would be appreciated. Tony

Both medications are FAA approved as long as you have a letter from your doctor stating that you are not having any adverse side effects to them.

Dear Dr.Roberts, I am 37 years old, aircraft pilot with a ATPL lic. (ICAO), ATPL lic. (Macau) and CPL lic. (FAA) typed on Boeing 737, Airbus 320/321 and experienced in several aircrafts. I lost my medical certification due to a unexpected illness; In last September (1997) I went to the Macau Hospital (near Hong kong) with symptoms like bloody diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort and weight loss. The doctors in Macau diagnosed an inflammatory bowel disease. I was evacuated to Oporto, Portugal, where the disease was confirmed as Ulcerative Colitis by Professors from Oporto University School of Medicine. I was subject to a first surgery resulting in a temporary ileostomy, but three weeks later I made another one to remove the entire colon and so, since then I have a terminal ileostomy. After months of successful recovery and treatment my medical, physical and psychological conditions are completely stabilized. The doctors team confirm my good health condition (fully capacity and perfomance), and so they agree that I am ready to return to flight status. With this conditions can I have a First or Second Medical Certificate ? Thank you very much,Jorge.
......................................................................
Yes, as long as you are not suffering from any residual symptoms. It will require a special issuance. You will need to submit a report from your treating physician along with ALL your medical records along with a request for a special issuance.

Hi! I had a bleeding ulcer and required 5 pints of blood in March 98. Additionally I was taking 50 mg. of Zoloft which I stopped in Jun. 98. The only medications I currently take are iron supplements (1000mg/dy), synthyroid .1 mg/day, 2 prilosec daily. What will be required of me to regain my 2nd class medical?
......................................................................
You will need a few more months to stabilize. You will need to submit ALL of your medical records, along with a summary report from your treating physician indicating your diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and the fact that you are no longer on Zoloft.

I have a peptic ulcer, controlled with daily use of Pepcid. How will this effect my medical?
......................................................................

If you have had a peptic ulcer within the last three months, without a history of bleeding, you must submit proof that the ulcer has healed. If there was a history of bleeding within the last six months, you must also submit same. You must submit a letter from your doctor indicating the diagnosis, stating that the ulcer has healed, either X-Ray result or endoscopic tests indicating healed status, as well as the type and dosage of medications used.
