The Young Airman

   The smiling youngster with tousled hair,
   So often seen and yet so rare,
   Passing unnoticed through the walks of life,
   Never missed until his death.

   He knows the game he's playing well
   And the price so many pay,
   Caring not what the future holds,
   Living only day to day.
   
   Praised in war, forgotten in peace,
   His roll still calls for sacrifice.
   Yet, like all his aircrew brothers, 
   He would not change for any other.

   For, pitying those who pity him
   In his kingdom he is King.
   Richer by far in treasures rare
   Than those who never take the air.
